The Value of DART

Since 1983, DART has played a vital role in connecting people, places, and opportunities across North Texas. By providing reliable bus and rail service, DART helps residents get to work, school, healthcare, and community destinations while reducing traffic congestion and supporting cleaner air. Ongoing investments in modern vehicles, safer stations, expanded service, and improved amenities are designed to make transit more convenient and accessible for riders of all ages and abilities. From major regional rail projects to neighborhood-level service improvements, DART strengthens local economies, supports workforce mobility, and helps communities grow in a more sustainable and connected way—delivering benefits that extend well beyond the riders who use the system every day.

Economic Development

The latest UNT Economic Research Group study reveals the significant economic benefits of development projects near DART light rail stations.

In the 25 years since UNT first began its studies, development within a quarter mile of DART’s light rail stations has resulted in a $18.1 billion direct impact.

In 2022-2024, there were 37 development projects within one-quarter mile of DART light rail stations. These projects result in:
  • A $1.0 billion direct impact and
  • $1.9 billion total economic impact
  • Creation of 5,295 jobs, and total employment creation of 9,422 jobs, adding up to $724.2 million in labor income for workers in the region.
  • 10% and 12.6% rent premiums for residential and commercial properties, respectively.
These projects created $51.5 million in construction-related state and local sales tax revenue and resulted in ongoing property tax and sales tax revenue to benefit local communities.

The DART TIRZ Interlocal Agreement provides all cities with another tool to leverage future sales tax growth to support economic development. This program was developed in cooperation with service area cities and ILAs will be provided for execution.

Planned Capital & Service Investments

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is implementing a coordinated strategy of capital investment and service enhancement to strengthen regional mobility, support economic growth, and improve the customer experience across North Texas. Through targeted infrastructure modernization, fleet and facility upgrades, and the delivery of major projects such as the Silver Line Regional Rail, DART is reinforcing the reliability, safety, and long-term sustainability of its system. These investments are guided by the 2045 Transit System Plan, which establishes a forward-looking framework to respond to population growth, evolving travel patterns, and emerging mobility technologies.

In parallel, DART’s Mobility+ Program advances near-term service improvements that deliver immediate value to riders and communities. Key initiatives include strategic bus network enhancements to improve frequency and connectivity, and expanded passenger amenities and mobility hubs. Together, these capital and service initiatives reflect DART’s commitment to providing an efficient, equitable, and future-ready transit system that benefits the entire region.

Safety & Security

DART has a comprehensive security strategy, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessments of all facilities, crime prevention messaging, and visible uniformed presence.
DART provides the following staff resources to support safety and security:

o 225 police officers
o 76 fare enforcement officers on the rail system
o 100 contracted, armed transit security officers on the rail system
o 4 police/Parkland social worker teams on the system to address vulnerable populations and connect them to services

o Clean teams at end-of-line stations

Overall violent crime (Assault, Homicide, Robbery, and Sex Crimes) is down 18% as of October 15, 2025, which is the last full reporting period.

A new Video Management System (VMS) and upcoming capital project will replace 7,700 cameras across the fleet and facilities to be monitored by a new consolidated dispatch and command center (CDCC).
